Some cars have very simple owner demographics. If you buy a new Honda Civic, chances are, you simply don’t care about cars. Other models though are very different. The owners often fit a very specific profile, or in the case of the Miata, one of three:

1. The compensating douche - STANCE BRO. Not with a specific vision in mind, just as low as possible with an overly loud exhaust. This man NEEDS attention because his daddy never gave him any. He drives like a dick and abuses his car whenever he drives it, with no regard for the safety of himself or others. Wears a self-congratulatory shirt telling you how great his car is, because that’s the level he’s on.

Kinja'd!!!

2. The driving enthusiast, AKA pretty much everyone on Oppo who owns a Miata. This individual appreciates that Miatas are an awesome performance bargain, and a cool platform to modify if you do it right. They usually have clean, relatively conservative builds like the NB pictured above. Lots of emphasis on handling upgrades, little interest in sticker bombing or JDM license plates.

Kinja'd!!!

3. The Dad - these are the dudes who buy these things new. They often have no idea that the older models have a cult following, and rarely make any modifications. They’re just enjoying what they have - a clean NC or ND.

Edit: See !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ’s comment below for a fourth category, the wannabe brit. Genius suggestion.

All the 1990-1994 models were bought by them. All are now on their 12th owners today.

My mom would have been in an oddball category then. She had a red Mazdaspeed MX5 with every Mazdaspeed part on it. She was pissed that the Roush Stage 3 Mustang convertible was sold, and bought the Miata after leaving the dealer. That Miata was washed every week, and waxed every other week. She traded it in after 5 or 6 years with 8k on it.

I’m thankful that stance is actually not very common where I live.

Miatas are also not very common where I live.

I would’ve bought the ND new if I had money to burn, simply because the used selection is so poor/expensive.

wouldn’t that be category #2?

I bet she got over the Roush being sold by doing some sweet donuts in the Miata on her way out of the lot ;)

There is nothing wrong with that. Civics are great cars that will give you many enjoyable miles. Plus, it’s got VTAK!!!!!!!!

The one that everyone always misses is the wannabe Brit. These are generally older guys who used to have an MGB, Spitfire or Elan, but no longer can/want to deal with British sports cars being temperamental. They modify Miatas in bizarre ways, including wire wheels, luggage racks and extraneous wood trim, to make them more reflect the roadsters they descended from.

I bought mine new too. But, if it’s any consolation I had a Subaru XV and a Mazda 3 before the Civic. I just wanted a car for my daily commute since I put close to 500 miles a week on my car. But, I am bored of the Civic and want something else. Thinking maybe a Mini Cooper next go round.

I don’t think just numbering them 1-2-3 reflects the proportions of these owner bases.

The driving enthusiast probably makes up 90% of all NA Miatas. The Stancebro’d NAs only get so much attention because of how stupid it is to take a good handling car and ruin it. Stancebros don’t care about handling so it makes no sense they would choose the Miata over something with maybe more “style” and “street cred” like a TSX or Integra to ruin.

The majority of Miatas I see are driven by group one. The rest are driven by middle-aged to senior women. I very rarely see any of the other two types of owners.

Nope she didn’t want to clean the rubber of the paint. She raced a Vette, and the Vette got pulled over after leaving the dealer. She was pissed to find that somehow the inside of one of her racing heart rims got scratched a month before she got rid of it. She still is pissed about not getting the Roush. lol
